History

GOOS-AFRICA is one of the 12 GOOS regional alliances. Its principle is based on African Grassroots Approach & Ownership.

GOOS-AFRICA claims to:

  • Be an African Union Program for the integrated management of African Oceans and Coasts.
  • Contribute to the institutional building of the African Union Commission.
  • Support the Operational Sustainability of the IOC Sub-Commission for Africa and Adjacent Island States.

Essential dates to remember:

  • 1999: Adopted at IOC Assembly
  • 2000: Resolution of UNESCO General Conference
  • 2001: Recognition by the Nairobi Convention
  • 2002: Recognition by the Abidjan Convention
  • 2002: Adoption at the Summit of African Heads of State and presentation as a Priority Program for Africa’s development
  • 2003: Inclusion of GOOS-AFRICA/ROOFS-AFRICA in the NEPAD Environmental Action Progamme, Algiers, and at the UN General Assembly and G8 Summit
  • 22 March 2006: Adoption by African Union Resolution
